Dental trauma can be painful and stressful — but don’t panic! If a tooth breaks or gets knocked out, it’s important to seek professional dental help immediately. Until you arrive at your dentist’s office, follow the steps below to protect the tooth and increase the chances of saving it.
1. Keep It Clean
The key to saving a tooth is to find it and preserve it properly. If your tooth has been knocked out, pick it up by the crown — the chewing surface. Avoid touching the root, as this can introduce bacteria and make it harder to reinsert later.
2. Preserve It
Most dentists recommend trying to gently place the tooth back into its socket so it’s level with your other teeth. Bite down softly on a piece of gauze or a wet tea bag to keep it in place.
If you can’t reinsert the tooth, store it in a small container with enough whole milk to cover it. This helps keep the tooth’s surface cells alive until you reach the dental office.
3. Keep the Pressure
Apply a cold compress to your mouth or cheek to help reduce pain and swelling. If there’s bleeding, use a clean gauze pad to apply gentle, direct pressure.
Once you arrive at your dental office, your dentist can take it from there — it’s what we’re here for!
Quick Tip
The faster you act, the better your chances of saving your tooth. Try to see your dentist within 30 minutes of the injury whenever possible.
