4 Questions to Ask an Orthodontist

Getting braces is a big step toward improving your smile and oral health. With so many orthodontists to choose from, it helps to ask the right questions during your consultation. These four essentials will help you pick a specialist who fits your needs, schedule, and budget.

1. What is your experience?

Before choosing an orthodontist, confirm their training and hands-on experience. Ask whether they are a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) and about any board certifications or continuing education they’ve completed. Also ask how many years they’ve treated cases similar to yours and whether they feel comfortable taking on your specific needs.

In addition, request patient references or before-and-after photos to get a sense of their results and approach.

2. What are your hours?

Scheduling can be a major factor—especially if you or your child juggle school, work, and activities. Ask about regular office hours and whether the practice offers evening or weekend appointments.

Also check emergency availability: who do you contact after hours for issues like a broken bracket or a loose wire?

3. How long will treatment take?

Treatment length varies by case. While many patients finish treatment in about two years, factors such as the severity of the misalignment, the type of braces, and patient compliance can change that timeline.

Ask for an estimated treatment length, how frequently you’ll need follow-up visits, and what might speed up or delay progress.

4. What’s the cost?

Cost is an important consideration for most families. Prices can vary, so compare quotes from several orthodontists. Ask exactly what’s included in the price (e.g., retainers, emergency visits, follow-ups) and whether any additional fees may apply.

Be sure to ask about payment plans, in-house financing, and whether your dental insurance will contribute to treatment costs.

Final thoughts

Asking about experience, availability, treatment time, and cost will make your decision much easier and help you find the right orthodontist. If you’d like, schedule a consultation with our team—we’ll walk through your options and answer every question.
