Fluoride Treatments

Pediatric Dentistry Fluoride Treatments

At Epic Dental, we believe in preventative care, which includes safe and beneficial fluoride treatments.

What is fluoride?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in food and water that has been proven to be extremely effective in preventing tooth decay. Bacteria produce acid as they digest sugars, which attacks and erodes tooth enamel. Fluoride helps strengthen this weakened enamel by being incorporated into the tooth and making it more resistant to erosion from bacteria acid.

Is fluoride safe for my child?
Fluoride has been used in dental treatments and products for decades and has been repeatedly studied and approved by the FDA as a safe and effective dental treatment for children. Fluoride benefits are widely recognized, and fluoride has been added in low concentrations to drinking water in many areas as a preventative measure since the mid-1900’s. This has been shown to positively affect oral health as teeth develop and grow during childhood. There are many beneficial at-home dental products that include fluoride as well, like toothpastes, mouthwashes, and rinses.

However, as with anything that’s good for you, it’s important not to overdo it. It’s essential to make sure your child gets the benefits of fluoride without overexposure, so if you have any questions about fluoride, fluoride-containing products, or at home use, our dentists will gladly advise you.

What are the benefits of fluoride varnish treatment?
While fluoridated water benefits the overall development of teeth, fluoride treatments are a topical method specifically formulated to safely give the maximum benefit to your child’s teeth once they’ve come in. We use a fluoride varnish that is painted on the teeth, which makes it both effective and minimally invasive. At Epic Dental, our fluoride treatments use the lowest dosages of fluoride that are still effective.

Fluoride can benefit patients of all ages, but is especially recommended for:

  • Those still learning about good dental hygiene. Young children have difficulty brushing and flossing thoroughly. Fluoride treatments can help protect their teeth while they learn.
  • Those with a dental history indicating susceptibility to cavities and tooth decay.
  • Those with braces.
  • Those whose diet is high is sugar and other carbohydrates.

At Epic Dental, we will work with you to determine the best course of treatment for you child. While fluoride treatments can help reverse early tooth decay and prevent cavities, proper oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits are essential for children to maintain oral health.

Feel free to contact us at our pediatric dental office to find out whether fluoride treatment is right for your child or to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists. We proudly serve Norwood, Walpole, and surrounding areas.
